Life Overview

Rev. Fr. Dr. Joseph Cheeran, also known as Cheeranachen, is a renowned church historian, orator, writer, and scholar of the Malankara Orthodox Church who continues to inspire and educate. Born in Pazhanji Village near Kunnamkulam, Trichur District, on August 17, 1945, he was raised by his father after losing his mother at the age of three. Despite these challenges, Fr. Cheeran earned First Rank in the Malayalam Vidwan Examination at the University of Kerala and later completed his Ph.D. from Mahatma Gandhi University. His thesis focused on 'The Influence of the Bible on Modern Malayalam Poetry.' Fr. Cheeran serves as the research supervisor of Mahatma Gandhi University in Union Christian College, Alwaye, and continues to guide doctoral theses for Ph.D. works.

Priest

Ordained as a priest by H.G. Yuhanon Mar Severiose, Fr. Cheeran has served in several dioceses, including Kochi, Kunnamkulam, Trichur, and Angamaly. He has been the vicar of numerous churches in the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and currently serves as a priest at St. Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church in Pazhanji and St. Gregoriose Catholicate Center, Angamaly. He also founded the Yuhanon Mar Severiose Foundation and continues to contribute as editor of 'Sion Sandesam' and 'Edavaka Pathrika.'

Professor

Fr. Cheeran served as a professor of Malayalam at Union Christian College, Alwaye, where he made significant contributions to academia. He has authored 56 books and published more than 400 research articles, primarily focusing on church history and literature. His works continue to be well-respected for their depth of research and their uncovering of untold historical narratives, inspiring ongoing scholarly discourse.
